About Rubberwood

Rubberwood is an eco friendly hardwood belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. Also called Parawood in Thailand, it is the common name for the timber of Hevea brasiliensis.

Contrary to its name, rubberwood is one of the more durable lumbers used in the manufacturing of today’s home furnishings. It is easy to work with by both hand and machine tools. It glues, stains and finishes well with very little tendency to warp or crack. With a dense grain character that is easily controlled in the kiln drying process, rubberwood experiences minimal shrinkage, thus making it one of the more stable construction materials available for furniture manufacturing.

Rubberwood produces latex used throughout the world for all rubber based products. At the end of the economic life of the rubber tree (generally 26-30 years), the latex yields become extremely low and so farmers then fell the rubber trees and plant new ones. Unlike other woods that are cut down for the sole purpose of producing furniture, rubberwood is only used after it completes its latex producing cycle and dies, hence making it the most ecologically “friendly” lumber used in today’s furniture industry.

What is Fairtrade

The international Fairtrade system represents the world’s largest, and also most recognised fair-trade system. This is a global movement with a strong and active presence in the UK. Fairtrade is a movement for change that works directly with businesses, consumers and campaigners.

Fairtrade is about better prices, but also decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices for items such as for this Guinea Console Table 1 Drawer – Light (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade looks at the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With simple shopping choices you can get farmers a better deal. And that means they can make their own decisions, control their future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves. There are over 1.66 million farmers and workers in 1,411 producer organisations across the Fairtrade system. Buying Fairtrade is easy. There are over 6,000 Fairtrade products such as coffee, tea, flowers and furniture.
