Owls have enjoyed huge popularity in the last few years – immortalised in greetings cards, wall art, jewellery charms, children’s room accessories etc. etc. In fact, the list is endless! So why are Owls so popular?

Dating back to Ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Certainly in Western culture, owls are synonymous with wisdom and knowledge. From their powerful talons and immense wing span, to their large eyes and heads that can turn as much as 270 degrees, they are certainly captivating creatures. There’s so much to admire. So perhaps it’s not surprising that our fascination with owls shows no sign of waning.

Our Owl Offering

Arguably nothing captures the true spirit of the owl quite like a wood carving. Take our own fair trade wood carvings, for example. The artisan celebrates the form of these majestic birds of prey with stunning detail and meticulous craftsmanship.

For example, the ‘Owl on Branch’ is beautifully hand carved and captures the trademark eyes and short, curved downward beak. The owl perches regally on a branch. This beautiful piece is available in three sizes.

Likewise the ‘Owl on Lumbar’ also shares the same stunning craftsmanship. With this piece, the artisan has used a darker wax to accentuate certain features such as the ears and beak.

Both these pieces are skilfully carved from a single piece of monkey pod wood.

Our ‘Set of 3 Owls’ are fun, quirky and exude personality! Hand crafted from albesia wood, they have a lovely hand painted brown finish.

Furniture

In our Furniture range, our ‘Owl Stool’ is ideal for use as a side table, stool or plant stand. Hand crafted by skilled artisans from a single piece of the finest monkey pod wood, the detail in the workmanship is truly awe-inspiring.

A few words about monkey pod wood?

Monkey Pod wood is known by a variety of names across many different cultures, including Thailand (where it is known as “Chum Cha” wood). A monkey pod tree can grow to a giant 24 metres in height.

Monkey Pod Wood has a medium to coarse texture. Therefore, this sustainable hardwood and its straight grain lend themselves well to the manufacturing process.

Our Monkey Pod wood items are hand carved by skilled artisans in Thailand. Their specialist techniques and expertise are often passed down through generations of families.

What is albesia wood?

Albesia trees are known as one of the fastest-growing trees. Some will grow to an average height of 21 metres. Albesia wood is light in both colour and weight. Usefully, it is resistant to termites. It is particularly suited to creating decorative carvings.
